Missoula Fly Fishing – Early 2015 Forecast

Missoula Fly Fishing
Good Things to Come in 2015

It is still too early for an accurate forecast of the 2015 Missoula fly fishing season, but so far everything has fallen in the anglers’ favor.  Last season we had good water levels and mild fall weather.  That allowed our trout to feed agressively late in the year, and the brown trout had a healthy spawn before winter shut the door.  While we did not have much snow early in the winter, it has come in waves lately and most all of our snowpack numbers are above 100% of average.  You can view an up to date snowpack map HERE.

We still have a long way to go before there is any clear picture on what type of water year to expect.  Even good snowpacks can melt off early if it gets too warm, or a rainy June can blow out our stonefly hatches, but what we do know is that our fisheries are healthier than ever.  We have had good water levels in 4 of our last 5 years and that means successful spawning and productive recruitment of juvenille trout.  Bottom line, there are a lot of trout in Missoula waters to target in the coming season.  Our areas diversity is a huge benefit as well; with so many different rivers and stretches there is almost always a productive option regardless of the conditions.

If you haven’t planned your Missoula fly fishing trip yet, you should consider doing so soon.  The best dates and best fly fishing guides book early these days.  There was a time when you could book a quality guide with only a month or two notice, but the age of information and technology has changed all that.  The top tier fly fishing guides are filling their schedules now, and if you wait to book it may be too late.
