FAQ - Montana Trout Outfitters - Your Fly Fishing Questions Answered

We specialize in the “Big Four” freestone rivers: the Bitterroot, Clark Fork, Rock Creek, and world-renowned Blackfoot  River.  We also provide exclusive jet boat fishing opportunities on the Upper Missouri River including the “Land of Giants” (as in “Giant” – large-sized trout).

Trips include a full shore lunch, non-alcoholic drinks, and all terminal tackle (flies and tippet). Rods and reels can be provided upon request. Full day trips are typically 8 hours.

We pride ourselves on patient instruction and are happy to teach beginners and children the fundamentals of casting and fly fishing.

The season kicks off with the Skwala hatch in March/April, followed by the legendary Salmonfly hatch in June, and September/October provide great mayfly hatches.

Yes, we offer both full and half day wade trips. These are best suited for anglers with previous fly fishing experience.

Yes, for the adventurous angler, we guide on several of the lesser-known small tributaries around Missoula

Both our float trips and wade trips are designed for up to two anglers and one guide. For larger groups we have multiple guides available.

The vast majority of guided fishing trips in Missoula are float trips. We get to cover many more miles of river on a float trip, the guide can help both anglers at the same time, and we almost always catch more fish on float trips. Wade trips are best suited for more experienced anglers who want the challenge of stalking trout on foot.

Yes, we offer float trips specializing in fly fishing for northern pike. Pike fishing can also be incorporated into a guided trout fishing trip on certain sections of river.

Full day trips are most popular and allow us to access all sections on our rivers. Half day trips are operated closer to Missoula and best if there is a time constraint or young children on the trip.

Yes, sightings of eagle, osprey, ducks, geese and deer are a daily occurrence. Encounters with elk are not uncommon, and there is always the chance to see moose or bears.

We do most of our fishing with 9 foot 5 or 6 weight fly rods. A 4 weight can be used for certain dry fly conditions. Serious streamer anglers will use a 7 weight rod occasionally

We do almost all our fishing with floating fly lines. If you are a dedicated streamer angler then a sink tip line is also useful.

We are happy to provide leaders and tippets for your trip. If you want to bring leaders we recommend 7.5-9 foot 3X or 4X leaders and 3X-5X tippet.

That depends on the time of year. From March thru June and again September thru November waders are a good idea. From late June through mid-September we typically “wet wade” with sandals, wading boots, or water shoes.

We can stop the boat and get out to wade fish. Generally the fishing is more productive from the boat on float trips, but the option to wade is available.

Deposits for canceled trips will be refunded (less a 10% processing fee) with 45 days or more notice.  Cancellations within 45 days will forfeit all deposit monies.  If we are able to re-book the guide, we will refund deposit or apply it to a future trip.

Read What Others Say…“I would like to say how much we enjoyed our days fishing with Tony Reinhardt. Over the course of 15 years on most of the western rivers, over 40 guided days and around 20 different guides, we have only once encountered another guide of Tony’s caliber.

Tony is enthusiastic about every aspect of his role, he is well prepared, he works very hard throughout the day, presents a professional and personable image and also knows very well how to put people on fish.”   Kevin Erdman
