The Missoula fly fishing report is more about what is yet to come than our recent conditions. After a warmer than average Feb. we have had some colder weather lately. Those icy temps finally broke today and gave way to glorious weather in the Missoula area. Our long-term forecast shows a warming trend with temps into the 50’s through the weekend and maybe even a few 60’s early next week. The spring fly fishing season is finally starting! I was on the water today and the warm sunshine was refreshing although the trout still seemed a little sluggish. Once it warmed up a little we started finding fish on nymphs in the slower holding water. There were a few midges and even a couple neumoras bouncing around but I didn’t see a rise all day. It’s still a little early. If the weather forecast holds however we will start to see a dramatic upswing in the fishing. The bugs will get more active which will add more menu items for those trout that have endured a long winter. By the weekend look for more consistent nymph fishing and dedicated anglers will probably be able to move a fish or two on dry flies as well. Sometime next week the first real push of bugs is going to show. With warmer weather things will happen in a hurry. The 2015 fishing season has finally started, and we look forward to some great options from now until late October!
